Earn Your Varsity Letter Through Equestrian Sport!

Hey Juniors! Did you know you can earn a varsity letter while showing your horse? Even if your school doesn’t currently offer letters for equestrian athletes, there are multiple ways to be recognized for your hard work both in and out of the show ring.

Minnesota High School Equestrian Association (MHSEA)

Students in grades 8–11 are eligible to register with the Minnesota High School Equestrian Association to become part of the MHSEA Equestrian Team— no tryouts required!

The MHSEA offers both JV and Varsity-level riding criteria for multiple disciplines, including Hunter/Jumper.

Online registration: April 1 – June 30, 2025

Special thanks to Patty Humphries for her ongoing work in making this opportunity possible for MHJA members—your advocacy for our community is deeply appreciated!

US Equestrian Interscholastic Athlete Program

Another great way to earn a letter is through the US Equestrian Interscholastic Athlete Program, open to riders in grades 5–12 who compete in any breed or discipline.

To qualify, athletes must be a subscriber or competing member of US Equestrian and complete one of the following:

  • Record 100+ hours of riding, driving, or training time, or

  • Compete in at least three competitions (USEF or non-USEF licensed).

Riders who meet the requirements receive an official Interscholastic Athlete Varsity pin and award letter from USEF. The program runs June 1 – May 31 each year, and students may apply retroactively for prior years if eligible.
